It was the work of Edgardo Carmona, a colombian sculptor that uses common structural steel elements like rods, tubes and sheets to create magnificent art pieces. As you can see in the photos I took during my visit, Carmona, even with such rudimentary materials, succeeded  on representation of natural moments and situations of people that easily blend with port textures.

The actions and expressions captured in those steel sculptures remember you Tin Man character from fictional Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum. And The Port de Suffren, with its textures, shades and colors, sets the perfect enviroment for Camona’s masterpieces.

From dock’s boulevard you can realize the high level of maintenance of The City of Light: There is no soot on bridges over Siena river although ships cruise it daily.

What is Data Deduplication? http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/what-is-data-deduplication/ http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/what-is-data-deduplication/#comments Sat, 14 Jul 2012 02:01:06 +0000 http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/?p=104 Continue reading ]]> Companies need to store massive amount of data everyday. They need their data backed up quickly and kept safe and ready for a prompt restore. In now days, this task is becoming harder and harder because data to backup is continualy growing. In fact, currently there are almost 3 ZettaBytes of business data in the world that costs USD 1.1 Trillion to store and secure. But there is a new concept gaining popularity among IT people. It is Data Deduplicacion and it comes to help in a huge problematic: data store, backup and restore!

What is Data Deduplication?

Data Deduplication is a specialized form of data compression whose main purpose is to eliminate coarse-grained redundant data. This technique is primarily used to improve storage utilization, but also helps to reduce network bandwidth consumption during file transfers.

Data Deduplication for Backups

Let’s say you are backing up some files at your office, some of those files changes a lot during a week, while others don’t and you need to make a daily full back up of all of them.

Full backup 1

Every time you perform a full backup you copy modified files and duplicated copies of unchanged files. As you can see this scenario has really poor storage efficiency, so you move to Incremental BackUp.

Full backup 2

Incremental Backup is better for backup’s storage requirements because you  copy only those files that have changed since the last backup, but if somebody performs a tiny modification on any file, those modified files will have to be copied totally. So this is still not optimal.

Incremental Backup 2

Data Deduplication optimize data store utilization for backups by storing changed file chunks only. Remember, a file is actually stored in several fragments called file chunks. So, your backup will have changed chunks only and no duplicated files.

Full backup 2 with DD

As you can see, this technology can increase your storage optimization. Using a very small chunk size of 4KB, HP says you can reduce your disk space for backup up to 1:20 depending on files nature.

Data Deduplication for File Servers

This technology can also help to reduce capital and operative costs in File Servers. In this case, deduplication is file based thus duplicated files are stored once. Currently, there are some developments oriented to use file chunk deduplication for Windows Storage Servers, but this can impact negatively on server’s performance.

In conclusion, Data Deduplication is here to reduce pressure on storage demands and is going to be a fundamental feature inside moderns and optimized data centers.

2001: A Space Odyssey http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/2001-a-space-odyssey/ http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/2001-a-space-odyssey/#comments Sun, 27 May 2012 20:10:24 +0000 http://www.josedavidgonzalez.com/?p=60 Continue reading ]]> 2001: A Space Odyssey was based on a novel written by Arthur C. Clarke. It was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick in the year 1968.

This is one of my favorite movies. I consider this movie as the cradle of science fiction movies about space, human origins and human evolution. This is the kind of movie that opens your mind for multiples interpretation, you can spend weeks rethinking and discussing its main ideas. Although there are very few dialogs between its characters, Kubrick made his point by presenting spectacular scenes and an impressive soundtrack.

Some people say this movie is way too slow or too boring. But they say that because they just didn’t get the outside view of humankind that is presented in this movie. In fact, this movie was selected by the United States National Film Preservation Board to be preserved in the Library of Congress because they consider it is a culturally significant film.

The landing waltz

I can compare this movie to Jules Verne’s books. They both presented a technology that was many years ahead of its time. I mean, in this movie you can find human hibernation, video conference, artificial intelligence, international space stations, interplanetary trips and even tablets! Remember, its is a movie of 1968, It was made a year before Apollo 11 landed on the moon. On this time, transistors were pretty big and there was not something similar to todays PC, BluRays or LCD Screens.

On the other side, the realistic features of the movie are pretty impressive. Next time you watch it, please take care of tinny details other space movies forget:

  • There is no sound in outer space:It is vacuum! 2001:A Space Odyssey is one of very few movies to consider this. You will not hear any special effect of the scenes in outer space. I have a long list of movies plagued with bruuuums, pheeews and boooms in outers space which give certain emotion to those films but take them away from reality.
  • Long distance communications delay. Kubrick considered the huge distance of interplanetary travel and its impact on propagation times of electromagnetic waves. Some others movies presents intergalactic communications without this effect, almost instantaneous which is impossible.

High detail modelIf you have not yet see this movie, and you like science fiction, please do yourself a favor and see it! I recommend you blu-ray version in order to enjoy the fine models, music and details of this movie. You can find it here: 2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray / DVD]

The pictures presented here are screen-shots of the movie.

Topotepuy is located in a beautiful hill at Los Guayabitos, Caracas, Venezuela and is intended as a place to observe and preserve nature.

Within its 10 acres you can find numerous species of Bromeliads, Orchids and Aquatic and Xerophytic plants. Also, you can see a lot of free Hummingbirds interacting between them and with their environment.

At Topotepuy you can take a photowalk guided by an ecologist professional photographer and get inside its clouded forest while learning to document nature through your camera. In fact, you don’t need to be an expert on technical aspect of photography in order to get magnificent pictures of the flora and fauna around you.

Its main objective was protect Pampatar’s dock and custom from pirates and corsairs. This castle has a squared shape with one tower in every corner and is located at Pampatar city, Margarita Island, Venezuela.

During Venezuela’s Independence War in 1816, Venezuelan heroin, Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi was held captive by Spanish soldiers inside one of the dungeons of this castle.

Currently, it holds a museum where you can find valuables colonial objects. It is a hidden spot of Venezuelan history which you can visit from Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00-12:00 AM and 2:00-6:00 PM.
